Argentine rapper Trueno has joined forces with Maria Becerra for the official video for “90s,” their collaboration from his fourth studio album, TURR4ZO, released in April.
Produced by Tatool and El Guincho, “90s” incorporates a sample of “Orbitando” by Los Encargados, an Argentine new wave group formed by Daniel Melero in the ’80s. The track combines pop and rock influences with synthesizers and vintage textures while exploring desire and nostalgia.
The video leans into the song’s nostalgia with grainy black-and-white footage, split screens, close-ups, and period-inspired styling. Agustín Puente and Clemente Bruzzone directed the clip, which marks the fourth visual released from the album after “X UNAS LLANTAS”, “TURRAZO” and “PUMAS” featuring up-and-coming Argentine rapper Milo J.
TURR4ZO draws extensively from Argentina’s musical history, using samples of local artists as diverse as Gustavo Cerati, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Sandro, Carlos Gardel, and Los Abuelos de la Nada. In a statement accompanying the album’s release, the project was described as “a love letter to Argentina,” with sampling used as a way of paying tribute to the country’s musical traditions while reinterpreting them through hip-hop.
The video arrives amid an international run for Trueno that has included performing with Gorillaz in the UK, collaborating with Cypress Hill, making his Fuji Rock debut in Japan, and performing at Central Park’s SummerStage in New York.
