Sleater-Kinney

Olympia, Washington indie rock band Sleater-Kinney was formed in 1994 by Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein. The band was initially heavily involved in the Riot Grrrl scene, with a hardcore punk style of music and a strong feminist politic. However, the band began to shift away from those sonic sensibilities, transitioning to punk rock and eventually indie rock over time.

In 1997 the band released Dig Me Out, which saw their third core member for the majority of their existence join the band, Janet Weiss. The album earned them critical attention, paving the way for them to transition away from the Riot Grrrl scene and into a more traditional indie rock style over their next few releases throughout the early 2000s.

After opening for Pearl Jam and subsequently playing stadiums, the band was influenced to make a noisier, rockier album, leading to the band's seventh record in 2005, The Woods, to be a sprawling, massive noise rock record. Following stress on the road after this release, the band went on a hiatus.

The band announced their return in 2014, releasing an album in 2015. Since then, the band has put out music every few years, and toured consistently. Janet Weiss departed the band in 2019. The band recently released a record in January of 2024.
