Summer Of Hate

Summer of Hate (So H), is a shoegazing band from Espinho, created by João Martins (Guitar, Backing Vocals) with Laura Calado (Voice, Lyrics), Fábio Pereira (Bass), and Pedro Lopes (Drums) with two more guest guitarists (Ricardo Fonseca, Xavier Valente), whose sound is rooted in psychedelic music with influences in rock and pop from the 60s, as well as in its revivalism in the 80s (Echo & the Bunnymen, The Church, The Jesus and Mary Chain), in post-punk, in noise rock, in global music and in both classical music and middle-eastern folk. Since it’s inception band has toured the iberian peninsula extensively and have played shows that featured The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Damned, Fat White Family, Sisters of Mercy, A Place to Bury Strangers, The Veldt, Cult of Dom Keller, Pale Blue Eyes, and fellow portuguese scene breakthrough acts like MAQUINA., Conferência Inferno, Solar Corona and HETTA while getting radio play in Portugal’s alternative radio stations and in the UK.
In 2026, the band intends to expand its sound, get heavy and open the circle pit with the double album “Blood & Honey”.
They are two contrasting sound explorations that expand the musical lore of the band from Porto and its spectrum of emotions while shaping the songs in typical Summer of Hate fashion: epic and anthemic.
“Blood” - An exploration of the language of shoegazing through “global” music, punk and danceable rhythms. A pot with various ingredients from sufi music, dabke, Phrygian and Indian scales, raga, drone, swells to expand the psychedelic language and the impressionism of shoegaze. Its aim is to promote the Middle Eastern musical aesthetic and expand it through the energy of punk and noisy textures.
“Honey” - An expansion of the shoegazing sound of the debut album, broadening the lexicon of portuguese pop music and taking the band's working method of pastiche and timbral revivalism of the 60s and mashing twee, jangle, post-punk, britpop and slowcore all together in three songs, maintaining it’s psychedelic tendencies and creating beautiful melodies whose aim is to melt hearts while nerding out on NME’s C86 compilation.
