Last week, Dave Chappelle revealed that, for the first time since walking away from Chappelle’s Show nearly two decades ago, he may be open to a revival. “If you’d asked me that question a year ago, I’d have told you absolutely not,” the comedian told AP News in an interview. “But in the last few weeks … I’m considering it.”
During an appearance at the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony over the weekend, where he honored Eddie Murphy, Chappelle expanded on those comments and said Murphy himself was the reason he’s considering such an idea.
As Chappelle recounted during a speech honoring Murphy, he recently went to visit the legendary comedian at his home. “I didn’t know it was the day after his 65th birthday. The weather was beautiful. His grandkids were outside playing in the pool, screaming and laughing like children, just pure joy,” Chappelle recalled. “And me and Eddie, for the first time, talked about [his brother] Charlie since he passed. I hadn’t seen him or really had an occasion to speak about it. And in the midst of conversation, Eddie was the one that said, ‘Man, you should do a Chappelle’s Show movie or something like that.’ And I said, ‘Man, that’d be tough. That’s your brother.’
Murphy’s brother, Charlie, was of course a mainstay on Chappelle’s Show during its three-season run, appearing in several classic sketches, including “The Playa Haters’ Ball,” “Mad Real World,” and the infamous Rick James sketch. Murphy died in 2017 at the age of 57 following a battle with leukemia.
However, Chappelle said he told Eddie he would consider reviving Chappelle’s Show if he would fill in for his later brother: “So Eddie, if I do it, man, do the Charlie parts and let’s fucking go.”
Dave Chappelle told a really sweet story about hanging with Eddie Murphy at his house two weeks ago as his grandkids played in the pool.
