Kacey Musgraves recently stopped by BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge to promote her upcoming album, Middle of Nowhere. In addition to performing the cheeky lead single, “Dry Spell,” the country pop star delivered a syrupy cover of SZA’s “Kill Bill.”
Wearing a black cowboy hat and a matching top, Musgraves’ sweet voice made a perfect contrast to the lyrics of SZA’s No. 1 hit, a song about revenge in which the R&B artist quite literally imagines killing her ex. With the backing of a slide guitar and acoustic six-strings, the cover transformed “Kill Bill” into a sweet-and-sour murder ballad.
Meanwhile, the Live Lounge version of “Dry Spell” sounded just as good as the recorded version, with Musgraves leaning into the wry lyrics. Watch both performances below.
In March, Musgraves released “Dry Spell” as the first single from Middle of Nowhere, which is set to arrive on May 1st via Lost Highway Records. Pre-orders are ongoing.
She’s since previewed the album with the title track, and premiered the unreleased songs “Back on the Wagon” and “Uncertain, Texas” during her surprise Coachella Weekend 2 set earlier this month.
