Say this for DC Studios: Its approach to TV shows is not boring. Following the recent launch of HBO’s gritty, True Detective-esque Lanterns, HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order to The People v. Gorilla Grodd, a half-hour comedy framed as a “‘true’ crime docuseries.” Skyler Gisondo reprises his role from 2025’s Superman as Jimmy Olsen, while Jimmy Tatro will play super-intelligent ape Gorilla Grodd.

In the series, per the official description from HBO Max, “A superintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part ‘true’ crime docuseries, the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials.”

This is not Tatro’s first time in a fake true crime series, as the one-time YouTuber broke out as an actor in the acclaimed Netflix comedy Who Drew the Dicks? American Vandal. Also reprising their Superman roles are Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, and Wendell Pierce, along with new cast members Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz.

No release date has been set, but check out the first-look teaser graphic below. Superman is currently available on 4K Ultra HD via Amazon.
