The demo tapes that make up seven of the 16 tracks on baby’s gone were originally recorded in 1992 by Bratmobile’s Molly Neuman. baby’s gone also contains nine tracks from heavens to betsy’s three 7-inch releases, 1994’s Directions, 1993’s These Monsters Are Real, and an untitled 1992 split with Bratmobile. “(Neuman) grasped right away that it was important for young women to have these tools to express themselves,” Corin Tucker, heavens to betsy guitarist and vocalist, said in a statement. “She was so confident and so unafraid to just be like, ‘Yeah, why don’t I just record that for you? I’ll just check out the Tascam from the AV library at Evergreen and do it.’”
Tracy Sawyer, heavens to betsy’s drummer, said in a statement she wasn’t sure if she would ever revisit heavens to betsy. “Then when we started talking more about it, and feeling how relevant the subjects are today, almost even more so than they were back then it just seemed like just the perfect opportunity to be doing this.”
“Ain’t never goin’ back” is a raw embodiment of a band in their most nascent days that constitutes the purest form of garage rock. The anthem’s thrumming lo-fi captures Tucker and Sawyer’s sense of freedom, the press release said.
Tucker of Sleater-Kinney and Sawyer of The Husbands, The Flying Tigers and The Lies formed heavens to betsy in Washington in the early 1990s, inspired by bands like Bratmobile, Bikini Kill and other riot grrrl groups. Along with their 7-inches, they released underground punk rock gem Calculated in 1994.
The duo reunited to play their first show in 32 years in June. That same month, the band announced a coast-to-coast US tour, which kicks off October 17th in San Francisco.
